Lifesaving at Newcastle Beach

Newcastle Beach is a dynamic coastal stretch between Newcastle Ocean Baths, and the Bogey Hole. It is a known favourite for local bathers and board riders, as well as a top tourist attraction for visitors to the Hunter.

It's iconic rock shelves, Shark Alley, a marine environment used by fisherman, bathers and surfers alike. Main beach is characterised by the Red and Yellow Flags signifying the SAFEST area for swimming. Whilst South Newcastle Beach is known for its "Southy" break,a popular wave for the local board riders.

We currently have approximately 100 active volunteer patrolling members carrying out lifesaving duties on a rostered basis from September to April.  It is these members that continue to ensure that no lives are lost between the Red and Yellow Flags Australia wide.

For those new readers whom are thinking that patrols may be for you, come down to the beach on a Sunday and check out what we do.

New members are always welcome at Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club.

For our current patrolling members, please read below for the 2011/12 season brief

To our patrolling members

Patrols commence Saturday 24th Septembers 2011 and cease Wednesday 25th April 2012 (Anzac Day). This period covers Saturdays, Sundays and numerous public holidays. It is our duty, as volunteer Surf Lifesavers, to ensure that the beach is patrolled on these days from 9.am until 5.pm

Many hands make light work! Patrol Teams are formed based on critical requirements of proficient members, so when one member does not turn up for patrol / organise a substitute. Members with 100% patrol attendance for the 2010/11 season were awarded a gym membership for the following season. This will be the same for the 2011/12 season. In order to qualify for this you need to complete all rostered patrols (Sat, Sun & Public Hoilidays) as advised by your Patrol Captain. If you are unable to attend your rostered patrol please contact your Patrol captain as soon as you are aware of your unavailability. It is up to you to seek a substitute patrol member and pay them back in patrolling hours accordingly.

The iconic Red and Yellow Quartered Skull Cap is here to stay for all Surf Life Savers Australia wide. This means that it is to be worn as part of our patrolling uniform.

Patrol uniform consists of;
- Red and Yellow skull cap
- Yellow long sleeve patrol shirt
- Red patrol shorts
- SLS equipped bum bags

It is important that in our role as Surf Life Savers that we wear our uniform with pride. After all, it is those (Surf Life Savers) that wear the Red and Yellow uniform that have ensured that NO LIVES have been lost between the red and yellow flags. be proud of this!

Every patrolling member is a valued asset to their patrol team. We encourgae all patrol members to further their "Surf Education" by taking part in the upcoming training courses. This aids in the development and maintenance of proficient surf life saving skills and responsibilities.

Refer to the Training" page for more information.

2011/12 will prove to be a good patrol season on Newcastle Beach
